Institute News

Volume 2, Number 1
August 2009

One full year has past since our inaugural website newsletter last August.  It has been a full and blessed year for The Overton Institute.

On November 1st we celebrated BurneyFest 2008.  This gathering in Atlanta of about 30 family and friends was a special occasion to mark the 10th anniversary of Burney's last sermon.  We shared our stories of the impact of Burney's life and work in the past, present and future, and recognized how The Overton Institute's mission to keep Burney's work alive is important to so many of us.    We plan to link an edited video of the event to our website later this year, so keep visiting!

This year we have also been able to transfer eight of Burney's Sermons from audio tapes to digital format.  Plans are in the works to link these files to the website, which will launch our "Burney Collection," an archive of Burney's work, which is the central program of our mission.

While we have not officially obtained 501(c)(3) tax-exempt status this year as we had planned, we have discovered that we are tax-exempt "by default" since we do not yet possess assets that require us to file a tax return!  Blessed are the poor!  As we continue to grow - slowly but surely - we will engage every resource available to use wisely the assets we possess in order to further our mission.

As we continue to develop the work of The Overton Institute, I hope you will be in touch with your stories of how Burney impacted your life.  Future plans include establishing a blog on the website for “Relational Communication Conversations” where we can share with each other lessons learned from Burney and from engagement with his work.  If anyone is a "web guru" please consider offering your talents in this area.  We are on a learning curve to turn all these visions into realities.

Please feel free to contact us with any questions you have about The Overton Institute or our  mission.   We look forward to the future of The Overton Institute’s important work, and to sharing with you the impact Burney has had, and continues to have, on all our lives.
