Several of us who were privileged to know and learn from Burney for many years, along with several of Burney’s children – and with Miriam’s blessing – have established a non-profit organization through which we plan to continue the work in practical theology that Burney began.  Along with living-out what he taught us, we believe the next greatest tribute we could offer, out of our gratitude to Burney, is to assure that what he taught us is available for future generations to learn and benefit from as we have. Hence, The W. Burney Overton Institute of Practical Theology, Inc. (d/b/a The Overton Institute) has been incorporated as a not-for-profit organization in the state of Georgia.  We wish to announce our formation and extend an invitation to you to participate with us in this important endeavor.

There are several ways in which you might choose to join with The Overton Institute in order to continue Burney’s work:

First, and foremost, please consider praying with us that God’s Spirit of unconditional love for all of God’s creation will be, and will always remain, the driving force of The Overton Institute.  Whatever it is that we each might believe about prayer and the effect it has on our lives, surely it can serve to bring us together with a focus through which to offer our collective support to The Overton Institute.

One of The Overton Institute’s main projects is to collect and archive any material Burney produced, or that was produced by others with Burney as the focus. “The Burney Collection” will include Burney’s Book, From Me – To You, the two different series of articles he entitled “As I See It To Be,” the “Burney’s Papers,” his sermons, and various audio and video recordings and photographs of Burney preaching, leading workshops, or facilitating groups.  We are hopeful that you might be willing to donate to The Burney Collection for archiving any letters, pictures, audio or video tapes that are not of such a personal nature that they could not be shared for the general benefit of others.  Any materials you choose to donate will become the property of The Overton Institute and could be edited, reproduced and distributed at the Board’s discretion.

We would be so grateful to anyone who might be willing to share with all of us any materials you might possess that were produced by or focused on Burney.  Should you choose to do so, it would be extremely helpful if you would contact us so we could learn about the occasion that prompted the material, the location and event of any recordings or photographs, the date the material was produced, etc, along with the format or medium in which you wish to send the material to us.

The Overton Institute will offer the Relational Communication^™ Workshop in the future.  When that time arrives we hope you will help us promote the Workshop to be offered through your church, civic organizations or work place.  Many of us have experienced the life-changing effects of the application of the Relational Communication Principles. Another main project of The Overton Institute is to continue teaching the powerful message of the Relational Communication Program.

The Overton Institute will continue to offer licensed professional counseling based on the theology of the unconditional love of God. Obviously, no one can replace Burney, be we can share with others what he shared with us by supporting counseling that is offered from the same theological/theoretical/therapeutic principles from which Burney offered pastoral counseling.

Last  November we gathered all the “Burney People” who could join us for BurneyFest 2008. We are editing a video of the event, which will be a part of The Burney Collection in the future.
